How embroidery works

More than something you buy — a name makes it yours for life.

Made by Oboro Towel, a mill founded in 1908 — a traditional Japanese towel with a crisp, dry hand that wrings out easily and packs down small.

34 × 40 cm — the size sold in Australia as a face washer.

Features
  • A traditional Japanese hand. Oboro towels have been made and used in Japan for generations, holding a moderate crispness alongside their softness.
  • A mill whose name became the towel. Founded in 1908, Oboro Towel is known well enough that the company name became the name of the cloth itself.
  • Easy to wring, easy to carry. It wrings out readily and takes up little room, which suits it to washing the body and to travel.
  • The original oboro dyeing method. The distinctive dyeing process has been unchanged since the mill opened, and keeps a devoted following.
  • Eight traditional Japanese colours. Dyed in eight colours handed down through Japanese tradition, pairing an old palette with an old cloth.
